Union baseball defeats No. 8 Cumberlands for the first time since 2017  

Williamsburg, Ky. – The Union College baseball team defeated No. 8 Cumberlands 7-2 in nine innings on Tuesday. It marks the first time the Bulldogs have beaten Cumberlands since a 9-8 win in nine innings in 2017.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. Sebastian Flores kickstarted the momentum with a single, which was followed by Luke Pell drawing a walk that advanced Flores to second base.

Mason Kelley hit an RBI single to score Flores. Tyler Bean continued the excitement with a two-RBI double that scored Kelley and Pell. 

Nick Seelman reached first base after being hit by a pitch, while Jafari Williams kept the rally alive with a single to load the bases. 

An error allowed both Seelman and Bean to score. Williams then capitalized on a fielder's choice by Flores, which extended the lead to 6-0.

In the top of the fifth inning, Logan Romasanta hit a solo home run over left field to give Union a 7-0 lead.

Union held its ground defensively as Cumberlands was limited to just two runs for the remainder of the game.

Carter Finlay, Braylon Greene, Eli Sizemore, Jose Perez, David Kottmer, and Zach Moore all made an appearance on the mound. 

Finlay gave up three hits; Greene, Perez, and Kottmer gave up two; Sizemore allowed one, while Moore gave up zero. Finlay had four strikeouts on the day. Perez and Moore each had two strikeouts, while Greene and Kottmer each had one.

 

Kelley led the way going two for four with one run and one RBI, while Bean contributed two crucial RBIs to Union's victory.

 

The Bulldogs are now 6-5 this season, while Cumberlands is 6-2. Up next for Union is a home conference doubleheader against Johnson on Saturday, Feb. 24. The opening game is slated for 12:00 p.m.
