Union baseball falls to St. Andrews in three-game conference series

 

Laurinburg, NC. – The Union College baseball team faced off against St. Andrews in a three-game conference series on Friday and Saturday.

The Bulldogs won the first game 7-2, but fell 3-1 in the second matchup. That resulted in the third game of the series being a rubber match.

In the top of the first inning, Sebastian Flores scored off an error. Union led 1-0 going into the bottom of the first inning.

Union trailed 7-1 going into the eighth inning, but the Bulldogs put together an offensive surge. Flores started the momentum with a walk. Then Luke Pell singled to right field, which advanced Flores to second base.

On the ensuing at bat, Nathan McCabe delivered an RBI double, which advanced Pell to third base and brought Flores home for the Bulldogs' second run of the game.

Pell then capitalized on a wild pitch by scoring, while McNabe advanced to third. Union trailed 7-3 going into the bottom of the eighth inning.

Sammy Serrano kick-started the top of the ninth inning with a single, which was followed by Nathan Aldaz reaching first base off an error. On the next at bat, both runners advanced on a wild pitch.

An RBI single by Flores allowed Serrano to score. Aaron Barrera then reached first base on a fielder's choice, which scored Aldaz.

Pell once again singled, which advanced Barrera to second base. McNabe was then walked, which loaded the bases. Mason Kelley reached first base off an error, which scored Barrera.

Union trailed by one run with the bases loaded and one out. St. Andrews prevented any additional runs as the Bulldogs fell 7-6 in nine innings. The Bulldogs fell 2-1 in the series.

 

The Bulldogs are now 5-5 (1-2 AAC) this season, while St. Andrews is 7-3 (2-1 AAC). Up next for Union is an away matchup against Cumberlands on Tuesday, Feb. 20. The game is slated for 2:00 p.m.
