Union baseball sweeps Aquinas in a doubleheader

Logansport, Ind. - Union baseball swept Aquinas in a doubleheader on Sunday. The Bulldogs won the first game 14-9, while picking up a 12-0 victory in the second matchup.

 

Game One:

In the top of the third inning, Jarred Seibel kickstarted the action with a single up the middle. Following Seibel's lead, Sammy Serrano executed a sacrifice bunt to move Seibel into scoring position.

Seibel would score of an RBI single by Diego Clariot. Later in the side, Sebastian Flores connected on a powerful home run. Union led 2-1 in the middle of the third inning.

The Bulldogs struck again in the top of the fourth when Mason Kelley drove a double to left field that allowed Jafari Williams to score. Williams had entered the game as a pinch runner for Nathan McCabe.

After a brief scoring hiatus, the Bulldogs exploded back into action in the top of the sixth inning by tallying an impressive nine runs. McCabe led the charge by taking one for the team with a hit by pitch. Williams stepped in as the pinch runner, and advanced to second on a wild pitch and then stole third base.

With the bases loaded after a walk to Kelley and a hit by pitch to Nick Seelman, Seibel hit into a fielder's choice that scored Williams. On the ensuing at bat, Serrano registered an RBI single that scored Seelman. Following that, Clariot hit an RBI single that scored Seibel.

Following an intentional walk to Jacob Torres, the bases were once again loaded. Flores would score as Stegman was hit by a pitch. Tyler Bean then stepped up to the plate and delivered a two-RBI single that scored Clariot and Torres.

Kelley continued the onslaught with yet another RBI double as Stegman scored. Seelman maintained the momentum with a two-RBI double that scored Kelley and Bean.

The Bulldogs weren't finished yet, as Serrano capitalized on a throwing error in the top of the seventh inning to add another run to the scoreboard. McCabe sealed the deal with an RBI double that brought home the final run for the Bulldogs.

Union won the opening matchup 14-9 in seven innings. In total, the Bulldogs amassed an impressive 15 hits throughout the game.

Christian McCollough, Jackson Clark, and Zach Moore all made appearances on the mound. McCollough led the charge with five strikeouts; Clark notched four. Moore adding one to the tally.

  

Game Two:

 In the opening inning of the game, Clariot ignited the Bulldogs' offense with a precision double to left field. Later in the side, Stegman followed up with a sacrifice fly that scored Clariot as the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard early. Union led 1-0 after the top of the first inning.

The next run of the matchup was scored by Union in the sixth inning. Flores kickstarted the surge with a double. Later in the side with the bases loaded, Flores scored when Luke Pell was walked. It was the third-straight walked batter.

On the ensuing at bat, McCabe scored off a balk. Aaron Barrera then seized the moment with a two-RBI double that scored Pell and Kelley. Union led 5-0 after the top of the sixth inning.

In the opening at bat of the seventh inning, Serrano tallied a single. He swiftly advanced two bases on wild pitches. Clariot continued the onslaught with an RBI single that scored Serrano. Clariot also capitalized on a wild pitch as he advance to second.

Flores hit an RBI double to further extend the Bulldogs' lead. Stegman was walked on the ensuing at bat, which loaded the bases. Bean seized the moment with a powerful two-RBI double.

The grand finale came courtesy of Kelley, who delivered a resounding three-run home run to put an exclamation point on the Bulldogs' performance.

Union won 12-0 in seven innings. In total, the Bulldogs amassed an impressive 14 hits throughout the game.

Ethan Warren, Carlos Soto, Evan Hiatt, and Dylan Hetzler each played crucial roles on the mound. Warren and Soto proved to be a formidable duo; surrendering only two hits.

Hiatt only allowed one hit, while Hetzler gave up no hits. Soto and Hiatt each tallied three strikeouts, while Hetzler added one to the mix.

 

Leading the charge at the plate, Serrano went 6-for-7. He contributed three runs scored and one RBI to the Bulldogs' cause. Clariot went 6-for-10 with three RBIs and four runs scored.

Kelley was 4-for-7 with five RBIs, two walks, and three runs scored. Bean was 4-for-7 with four RBIs, two walks, and two runs scored. Flores rounded out the lineup with a solid 3-for-8 performance that included two RBIs, four runs scored, and one walk.

  

The Bulldogs are now 4-3 this season, while Aquinas is 3-3. Up next for Union is its first conference matchup of the season as the Bulldogs will play at St. Andrews on Friday, Feb. 16. The game is slated for 2:00 p.m.
