Union baseball splits series with Goshen

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union College baseball team played the last two games of its four-game series with Goshen on Sunday. The Bulldogs won the first game of the day 17-6, and lost the second matchup 11-1. Union split the series against Goshen 2-2.

 

Game One:

After Goshen scored two runs in the top of the first inning, the Bulldogs countered with three runs off two hits in the bottom of the inning. Diego Clariot and Luke Pell each recorded a single. Jacob Torres contributed an RBI, while Logan Romasanta stole home.

In the bottom of the fourth inning with the score tied 3-3, Romasanta, hammered an RBI double to bring in pinch runner Seth Keener. Torres then followed with an RBI single to extend the Bulldogs' lead.

The momentum surged into the fifth inning as Nick Seelman delivered a clutch two-RBI double; plating Clariot and Colton Stegman. Seelman would score off a wild pitch. Union led 10-3 after five innings, but Goshen tallied three runs in the top of the sixth.

The Bulldogs kept the hits coming in the bottom of the sixth inning. Clariot tallied a two-RBI double, which scored Stegman and Sammy Serrano.

Seelman added to his performance with an RBI single that scored Clariot. Keener, Seelman, Pell, and Romasanta also scored in Union's seven-run sixth inning. Union won 17-6.

Clariot showcased his consistency by going two for two with four runs scored, two RBIs, and three walks. Seelman also went two for four with three runs scored, three RBIs, and a walk. Stegman contributed with a solid two for three performance, while scoring two runs.

On the basepaths, Jafari Williams had two stolen bases. Seelman, Romasanta, and Serrano each totaled one.

Ethan Warren, Jose Perez, Braylon Greene, Zach Moore, and Nathan Van Beek anchored the mound for the Bulldogs as they each tallied a strikeout to contribute to the team's success.

  

Game Two:

Union remained without a hit until a pivotal moment in the bottom of the fifth inning when Mason Kelley broke through with a double.

Seizing the opportunity, Kelley capitalized on a passed ball to cross the plate; making the score 5-1 Goshen. Kelley's final batting line for the day stood at one for two with one run scored.

Christian McCollough, Eli Sizemore, Carter Finlay, Romasanta, and Carter Shinavier all took the mound for the Bulldogs. McCollough had three strikeouts, while Sizemore and Romasanta recorded two strikeouts each. Finlay had one strikeout.

 

 

To cap off the series, Chariot emerged as the standout performer with an impressive batting average of .583 across all four games. He tallied seven hits, six runs, three doubles, five walks, and an on-base percentage of .706 to go with a formidable slugging percentage of .833.

Romasanta also recorded a notable performance. He registered a .600 batting average over three games. He offensive display included six hits, three runs scored, two doubles, three walks, an on-base percentage of .778, and a slugging percentage of 1.000.

The Bulldogs are now 2-2 this season, while Goshen is 2-2. Up next for Union is a home doubleheader against UC Clermont on Saturday, Feb. 10. The games are slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
