Union baseball splits first home doubleheader against Goshen

Barbourville, Ky. - The Union College baseball team started its season with a doubleheader against Goshen today, Feb. 3. The Bulldogs won the first game 14-5, but fell 3-2 in the second game.

 

Game One:

Sebastian Flores set the tone for the Bulldogs with a two-run home run, which scored Diego Clariot in the bottom of the first inning.

In the second inning, a single by Jacob Torres scored Luke Pell. In the bottom of the third, Pell followed with the only double of the game for the Bulldogs, which scored Colton Stegman and Flores.

Torres collected three RBIs in the matchup, while Pell and Flores got two; Clariot had one. Torres also had one stolen base. Flores batted two for two today, while Flores and Pell both went two for three.

Hunter Rossi, Dalton Kottmer, Grayson Makranyi, and Evan Hiatt all got on the mound today for the Bulldogs. Hiatt and Rossi led the way with four strikeouts, while Kottmer had two and Makranyi had one.

 

Game Two:

In the bottom of the first inning, Mason Kelley delivered a clutch single; driving in Clariot for the Bulldogs' first run.

Despite a quiet offensive stretch, the Bulldogs ignited in the bottom of the seventh when Jafari Williams blasted a solo homerun. Clariot and Logan Romasanta both went two for three at the plate.

Dylan Hetzler, Bryson Wolfenbarger, Jackson Clark, and Carlos Soto each took their turn on the mound. Clark led the pitching charge with an impressive four strikeouts, while Soto followed closely with three and Hetzler contributed two.

 

The Bulldogs are now 1-1 this season, while Goshen is 1-1. Up next for Union is a home doubleheader against Goshen on Sunday, Feb. 4. The games are slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
