BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union baseball team hit its first bout of adversity this season, as St. Andrews completed a three-game series sweep with 7-6 and 7-4 wins over the Bulldogs in Barbourville on Monday.
The losses drop Union to 15-8-1 overall and 6-5 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
GAME ONE
For the second straight game, Union fell into a 5-0 hole, rallied back to tie the game 5-5 before eventually falling late.
It was Dallas Trevana who delivered the big hit, as with a full count, two on and two out, he lined a single down the left field line to bring home two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs made things interesting in the ninth as Angel Mendoza continued his incredible power surge, by hitting a solo home run to left field with two outs to cut the deficit to 7-6. It was Mendoza's 14th home run of the season, the second most in the NAIA.
Ensuing batter Luke Powell then made great contact and hit a sharp line drive to left field, only for it to find its way into the glove of Jude Drzemiecki for the final out.
Mendoza had three hits and David Mitchell had two RBIs for the Bulldogs, who also benefitted from five Knight errors. On the mound, James Raffauf helped lead the comeback, scattering four hits over three-and-two-thirds shutout innings.
GAME TWO
The Knights blew open what had been a 1-1 game with a four-run fourth inning and they maintained a multi-run lead the rest of the way.
Union jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Logan Romasanta in the bottom of the first inning, but further scoring opportunities were wasted as runners were left at second and third base. That would be a recurring theme as the Bulldogs had at least one runner reach scoring position without scoring in each of their first five at-bats.
Romasanta recorded a second RBI with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly. Hazel Martinez added a solo home run in the fourth inning with Mendoza driving in a run on a seventh-inning single.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to play a non-conference game against in-state foe Georgetown on Tuesday, but that game has been canceled. Union is slated to host AAC foe Milligan on Friday and Saturday, though coach Chris Lewis says the dates are in flux as weather issues are supposed to persist into the weekend.
