UCU wins in five sets over Bluefield

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University volleyball team picked up a five-set win over Bluefield on Wednesday night. UCU won 3-2 (16-25, 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13).

The Bulldogs had two players record double digit digs. Raquel Kessler led UCU in kills with 17, while Emily Shumaker tallied 12. Katherine Acosta and Luisa Slompo each registered seven kills.

Maddy McGaughey led the Bulldogs in assists with 29, while Sarah Charkosky totaled 20. Nicole Almestica tallied 25 digs, which led the team. Kessler recorded 17 digs, while Charkosky totaled 14 and McGaughey tallied 11.

"Great match tonight," said UCU head volleyball coach Jeremy Wise. "It went longer than we wanted it to go, but we always have long battles with Bluefield. Hopefully we start earning and winning those little plays to get us off and going now."

The Bulldogs are now 7-11 (5-3 AAC) this season, while Bluefield is 9-8 (4-3 AAC). Up next for UCU is a road conference match against St. Andrews on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 10:00 a.m.
