UCU volleyball hosts 11th annual Cheyenne Wise Childhood Cancer Awareness Game

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University volleyball program hosted the 11th annual Cheyenne Wise Childhood Cancer Awareness Game on Tuesday night.

Cheyenne, the daughter of head Union volleyball coach Jeremy Wise, lost her battle with cancer at three months old. Union wore jerseys that recognized Cheyenne and childhood cancer awareness. During the match, donations for the charity Hearts to Hands were accepted near the concession stand.

The Bulldogs won the first two sets, but fell short as Johnson won 3-2 (15-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-23, 19-17.) Raquel Kessler led all players in kills with 22. Emily Shumaker tallied an impressive 19 kills, while Berkli Benefield accounted for 10.

Maddy McGaughey led all players in assists with 29, while Sarah Charkosky totaled 16. Three Bulldogs recorded at least 14 digs. Kessler totaled 23 digs, while Almestica recorded 20 and McGaughey tallied 14.

The Bulldogs are now 5-11 (3-3 AAC) this season, while Johnson is 13-3 (4-2 AAC). Up next for UCU is a home game against Pikeville on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11:00 a.m.
