Union volleyball falls in both of Friday’s matchups

Milligan, Tenn. – The Union Commonwealth University volleyball team began its 2024 regular season on Friday with two games in the Milligan Mountain Madness event.

UCU played Rio Grande in Union's first matchup of the day, while the Bulldogs faced Cumberlands on Friday night.

 

First Game:

Union fell short as Rio Grande won 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22.) Raquel Kessler led Union in kills with nine, while Jasmine Porter totaled seven. Luisa Slompo and Berkli Benefield each recorded five kills for the Bulldogs.

Maddy McGaughey led Union in assists with 15, while Sloan Coursey tallied 14. Nicole Almestica recorded 18 digs, which led the team. The Bulldogs fell to 0-1, while Rio Grande advanced to 3-1.

 

Second Game:

The Bulldogs fell short as Cumberlands won 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-17). Kessler tallied a team-leading 10 kills, while Jasmine Porter recorded seven.

McGaughey tallied 14 assists, which led the team. Coursey recorded 10 assists. Almestica accounted for a team-leading 16 digs, while McGaughey totaled 10. The Bulldogs fell to 0-2 on the season, while Cumberlands advanced to 6-0.

 

On Saturday, UCU is scheduled to face Shawnee State at 12:00 p.m. with a matchup against Point slated for 4:30 p.m.
