BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - An emotional game didn't go the way of the Union women's basketball team, as the Bulldogs started fast but couldn't find the basket in the fourth quarter of a 53-46 loss to conference foe Truett McConnell Saturday afternoon.
It was all Bulldogs early, as they hit five 3-pointers and held the Bears to 23 percent shooting in the first quarter as they built an 18-7 lead.
Truett fought back and eventually took the lead, but the Bulldogs staved off most Bear rallies through the first three quarters and held a slim 42-40 lead heading into the final 20 minutes, before the wheels fell off.
Union committed eight of its 25 turnovers while shooting just 1-of-11 from the field in the fourth, as the Bears closed the game out on a 13-4 run.
Gracie Jervis and Madison Cox both hit three 3-pointers, leading the team with 11 and nine points respectively. Haley Brock led all players with 11 rebounds while Ciara Uphoff had a team-best five assists for Union.
Following the game, the team honored former Bulldog Madison Taylor with the introduction of the Maddie Taylor Triple A Award, a new scholarship to be rewarded to a Union athlete "who embodies Maddie's spirit by demonstrating athletic and academic success, as well as a positive attitude." Madison passed away in an accident on Memorial Day last year.
