Pair of Late Rallies Doom Softball in AAC Doubleheader

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - Union College softball ran into a bit of bad luck on Monday as they dropped an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader to host Brenau (Ga.), which used late rallies to win 8-5 and 3-2.

The losses drop Union to 5-11 overall and 3-3 in league play, while Brenau improves to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the AAC.

GAME 1 - BRENAU 8, UNION 5

The Bulldogs put together a five-run rally and appeared to be on their way to victory, but errors and a sixth-inning outburst sent the Golden Tigers ahead.

Down 3-0 in the fourth, Baylee Kitts reached on an error to allow the first Bulldog run to score. Katy Redmon and Leea Cole followed with an RBI each, and Ariel Dailey capped the rally with a two-run home run to put Union up 5-3.

Brenau cut the deficit to 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. However, in the sixth, the Tigers took advantage of an error and lined four hits in putting together a four-run rally to claim an 8-5 advantage. Taylor Whisonant led off the seventh with a single, but Union was unable to mount a comeback.

GAME 2 - BRENAU 3, UNION 2

The Bulldogs appeared to be on the verge of victory, but another late rally gave the hosts the win.

Kitts singled in a run in the fourth to put Union up 1-0, and Whisnonant belted a solo home run in the fifth to make it 2-0.

In the sixth, Brenau collected three one-out hits in a row with the last one being a home run to send it in front 3-2. The Bulldogs attempted to fight back as they lined two hits, but a runner was caught stealing for the second out of the inning and a popout to the pitcher ended the threat.
