Saturday's spring scrimmage concluded a productive spring for Union football
Barbourville, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University football program held its spring scrimmage on Saturday, April 26, at Williamson Stadium. The Bulldogs are set to enter their first season under new head coach Boston Bryant, who spent the past two seasons as UCU's defensive coordinator.
Team Orange defeated Team black 10-7 in the spring scrimmage. Dustin Brown registered a 35-yard field goal for Team Orange on the final play of the first half.
Team Black secured a 7-3 lead in the third quarter off a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown by cornerback Jahquai Ford. In the fourth quarter, Jayden Ward scored off a seven-yard TD run for Team Orange.
Linebacker Samuel Hawthorne was the Defensive Player of the Game for Team Orange, while offensive lineman Camron Mitchell was the Offensive Player of the Game for Team Orange.
Ford was the Defensive Player of the Game for Team Black, while offensive lineman Logan Thomas was the Offensive Player of the Game for Team Black.
Bryant was pleased with the scrimmage, which was a low-scoring game as he anticipated.
"It went as expected. The defense has been in the same system for the past couple years; so, they are a little bit further along," Bryant said. "The offense is still working on some installations and tweaks to the system. I'm really proud of the energy and effort overall. I thought splitting into Team Orange and Team Black created a cool environment, and put us in some positions that helped us develop. It felt like a true game environment with everyone in attendance from recruits to the families of our players; to the faculty and staff. It was a really good showing."
Overall, Bryant was excited with how the spring scrimmage capped a productive spring for the Bulldogs.
"I thought it was a great event to conclude spring ball," Bryant said. "We appreciate all of the faith and hard work from the guys on campus. We're excited to be back on campus with them and our incoming players this fall."
